Project Case: Granite Finish Project for a Large Residential Complex in Denmark

Project Profile

  • Location: Denmark
  • Application Area: Large Residential Complex Facade
  • Project Area: 350,000 ㎡
  • Product: Granite Finish Flexible Stone
  • Core Challenge: Located in the extreme cold zone of Northern Europe, the client has extremely high requirements for building energy efficiency and explicitly demands that the Flexible Stone facade system must possess excellent thermal insulation functions.
  • Our Countermeasure: Innovatively added Aerogel into the specialized Flexible Stone adhesive to block heat conduction utilizing the extremely high porosity of aerogel, and sent the system to SGS for thermal conductivity testing.

Background & Challenges

Denmark is located in Northern Europe with long and freezing winters, and local building codes have extremely stringent standards for building energy consumption and thermal insulation performance. This mega residential project (with a total area of 350,000 square meters) requires the facade to present a heavy, durable granite texture.

However, the project encountered a thorny contradiction during implementation:

  1. The “Thickness Battle” between Insulation and Decoration: Traditional granite is heavy and requires a dry-hanging system, usually necessitating an additional thick rock wool insulation layer. This makes the exterior wall extremely thick, which not only encroaches on indoor space but also greatly increases construction difficulty and structural load.
  2. Thermal Bridge Effect and Energy Loss: How to effectively block the heat exchange between inside and outside while ensuring the beauty of granite to avoid “thermal bridges” and meet Denmark’s strict Passive House energy-saving standards was a dead end for all material suppliers.

The Solution: Aerogel-Modified Adhesive + SGS Thermal Testing

To find the optimal solution between “ultra-thin” and “thermal insulation,” the technical team at Guangdong Fortune Stone New Material Co., Ltd. broke away from conventional thinking and started from the underlying connection system of the materials:

  1. Aerogel-Modified Adhesive: Aerogel is known as the “lightest solid in the world” with an extremely high porosity (>90%). We innovatively introduced it into the specialized Flexible Stone adhesive. Aerogel microparticles form countless nano-level micro air chambers in the adhesive layer, extremely effectively blocking heat conduction and endowing the thin-bed system with outstanding thermal insulation capabilities.
  2. SGS Authoritative Thermal Testing: To prove the effectiveness of this black technology to the Danish client, we sent the system to SGS for thermal conductivity testing according to relevant thermal standards. Authoritative test data perfectly proved its excellent thermal resistance performance even at an extremely thin thickness.
  3. Seamless Replication of Granite: Combined with high-precision embossing processes, Flexible Stone perfectly presents the natural particles and heaviness of granite. Its extreme flexibility allows the system to better adapt to the complex nodes of Danish architecture, avoiding cracking.

Why Flexible Stone? Four Hardcore Data Points

  • ✓ Thermal Insulation: The aerogel-modified adhesive technology achieves highly efficient blocking of heat conduction at an extremely thin construction thickness, perfectly coping with the severe cold climate of Northern Europe.
  • ✓ Ultra-Lightweight: Areal density of just 3.96kg/㎡. Avoiding the use of heavy dry-hanging stone systems drastically reduces the building’s structural burden and lowers carbon emissions.
  • ✓ SGS Class A2 Fireproof: Achieves the SGS certified A2-s1, d0 non-combustible standard, meeting Europe’s stringent building fire safety codes.
  • ✓ Extreme Flexibility: Perfectly passes the 200mm diameter cylinder bending test, flawlessly conforming to various corners and irregular structures of the building, preventing cracking.

Project Outcome

The project has now been successfully delivered, becoming a benchmark for ultra-low energy buildings in the Nordic region.

The Engineering Director of the Danish client stated during acceptance: “We have been looking for materials that can satisfy the visual effect of granite while meeting extremely high insulation requirements. Fortune Stone’s aerogel adhesive solution is amazing, and the SGS thermal report dispelled all our doubts. This thin, beautiful, and energy-saving system is the key to our large-scale passive house construction.”
